Fun With Numbers

The pres recently threw a book at Congress. I’m not sure how many pages were in it, but it’ll cost America a trillion dollars. That’s how much money Bush is asking, no, daring, the Congress to give him in this year’s budget. Yep, a trillion bucks. That’s $1,000,000,000,000.00

He’s increasing military spending, of course, and cutting domestic spending, as usual. Oh, and he doesn’t want to pay for it by raising taxes. No, he wants to keep his tax-breaks for the rich and force our grandchildren to pay his debt to society.

Speaking of the rich, the big guy’s pals over at Exxon-Mobil had another decent year sucking money out of our pockets while our troops continue to battle for more oil in Iraq. Exxon-Mobil’s profit in 2007 was a cool forty point six billion. That’s $40,600,000,000.00

So, what about our troops? I realize Bill O’Reilly disputes the numbers coming out of Washington, but according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, things aren’t going so well. About one-third of the adult homeless population has served their country in the Armed Services. Current population estimates suggest that about 195,000 veterans (male and female) are homeless on any given night and perhaps twice as many experienced homelessness at some point last year. Many other veterans are considered “near homeless” or “at risk” because of their poverty, lack of support from family and friends, and dismal living conditions in cheap hotels or in overcrowded or substandard housing.

Look, I don’t blame all this on George, he’s had help – a lot of help – from fellow republicans and boatloads of money and support from lobbyists and special-interest groups. But don’t you think it’s time somebody said enough is enough?
